The Family Violence Counselling and Support Service (FVCSS) is a statewide Tasmanian Government service that provides professional specialised services to assist children, young people and adults impacted by the experience of family violence.

FVCSS offers professional and specialised services to assist children, young people and adults affected by family violence.

This operational service is part of the Safe at Home initiative: a Tasmanian whole of government response to family violence; FVCSS works with a range of services across government and the community sector.

FVCSS has offices in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart: appointments can also be made to see clients in other locations.

All FVCSS services are voluntary and free of cost.

The Family Relationship Advice Line is a national telephone service that helps families affected by relationship or separation issues, including information on parenting arrangements after separation. It can also refer callers to local services that provide assistance.

FDR Private is an independent mediation provider of Family Dispute Resolution (FDR). Unless exempted, participation in FDR is mandatory for parenting disputes before going to Court. Our mediators (FDRPs) are former family lawyers now working exclusively in mediation. They are senior FDRPs with a background in law and the social sciences.

We provide an affordable alternative to the not-for-profits – which are known for long wait times and high staff turnover. We offer face-to-face mediations or a remote service through online platforms such as Microsoft Teams. We charge $90/hour per party and aim to improve access to justice by providing high quality, prompt and affordable FDR. We conduct mediations for parenting and property settlement disputes.

The Courts’ case management pathway aims to ensure that 90 per cent of family law cases are resolved within 12 months of filing.

Matters follow a nationally consistent case management pathway.

The first court event takes place within six to eight weeks of filing. Where it is safe to do so, parties will be required to undertake mediation or other dispute resolution within six months of filing, with the aim of resolving their dispute earlier in time and reducing the financial and emotional stress of litigation.

If the parties are still unable to settle, they will be sent to trial which is to commence, where possible, within 12 months.

The Safe at Home criminal justice response to family violence includes an increased role for Police in family violence incidents.

All Tasmania Police officers receive training to respond to and investigate incidents of family violence. General duties officers at every police station respond to reports of family violence.

Reporting family violence to police is a significant step, but you will be supported by officers who will treat you with courtesy, respect and without judgement.

To report a non-urgent incident of family violence, call the Tasmania Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or attend your local police station to make a report.
