Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY)

HIPPY is an early learning program which builds the connection between parents and children, improves self-esteem, provides free educational resources, and prepares youngsters for starting school. Tutors visit parents/caregivers at their home every week/second week to show them how to do the HIPPY activities with their child. Parents also meet regularly in a group to practice new activities, listen to guest speakers and participate in fun games that they can then try at home with their children.

Services Include:
  • helping parents to understand how to be more involved in their child's learning
  • helping parents understand more about child development and the way children learn
  • assisting parents to encourage a love of learning in children
  • preparing children for school
  • building children's self-esteem and confidence in learning (focusing on literacy and numeracy)
  • providing opportunities for children to enjoy time with parents
  • the opportunity for parents of the program to gain paid employment as HIPPY tutors

It is a free service.

Parents and caregivers with children three and a half to four and a half years old in the Launceston area are eligible for this service.
